In other news, this is Penguin-y:
He is Charlie's beloved stuffed penguin, and this relationship has led to a love of all things Penguin at our house.
Hence, Charlie requested a Penguin party for his fifth birthday. I decided I could work with that. Oh yes, I could work with that:
Greg was right--I should have incorporated him into my display!

I made these cute penguin balloons, but the balloons were from Safeway and they crapped out on me before the party even began.
Luckily penguin colors matched my display. Here's our igloo:
Charlie was adamant that we play a game where little penguins are frozen in ice and have to be rescued. I was wary but went with it. It was the highlight of the party.

Note: I usually don't post pictures of other people's kids--let me know if you don't want your kid's picture in this post! Then they built sugar cube igloos for those penguins:
We played some games like waddling with a penguin egg:
And after all of that there was still an hour left. So in desperation I read a penguin book.
It was a raging party. The cake was one of my finest--not to be confused with my worst. Costco made it but I decorated it.

Tyler's contribution was the meticulously crafted igloo for the cake. He even carved individual sugar cubes.
I have to say I don't love Costco's white frosting. I sacrificed taste for cake appearance. A bonehead move indeed.

Charlie thought it was the bomb though. And that guy can melt my arctic heart on even the frostiest of days.

Happy Birthday, Charlie! Did you make penguin colored layered jello? Did I see that in the photo? Genius!
Charlie has impeccable taste. I love the theme and would like to rescue a penguin from an ice cube as well. It looks so fun.
That cake is outstanding! Good work, Ashley and Tyler!
Amazing party. Love this. You are so creative!!
So impressed with the decorating! Love the use of the sugar cubes.
all the details were amazing. the little pint-sized penguin is a coveted piece around my house. i am asked many times a day, "where's my little penguin from charlie's party?" it's like finding a needle in a haystack...over & over again.
the penguin food was also adorable.
& the igloo entrance--where did you come up with all these great ideas?
a job well done!
Ashley - you are becoming the "Hostess with the 2nd Mostess!" I can't believe how much artistic talent and creativity you inherited from ME! (haha) What a cute party!! When I called Charlie a couple of days before the party, I said, "Charlie, I wish so much that I could come to your party." (I live in UT) He said, "well come-- I SENT YOU AN INVITATION!" So cute. Good work, Tyler - also!
BTW - I went back in the pictures looking for the layered jello and couldn't find it. ..
That last comment was me - LINDA - not Brooke. I just figured out how to sign her out.
What a great, homespun, done-right party-- thats what I love! and that cake with the igloo is rockin' -- way to go Tyler on the details.
I love Charlie so much. He will always have a soft spot in my artic heart.
I love his decorations that he made.
You did such a great job on this party. The cake is out of this world and the games were really creative.
I tip my hat to you. Where did you find those little penguins?
Clearly, mom and I are using the same computer and it is a total mess.
that last comment was me.
I CANNOT believe Charlie is 5!! It was like yesterday, that we went to see him at the hospital right after he was born. All I can remember is a head of gorgeous red hair.
The birthday looks like a success.
Love the cake.
So cute! I love all of it! I think what Hayley meant to say was, "Did you seriously just send home a tiny toy that I have to keep finding over and over?" Hahaha. Adorable.

I love this. What a great mom, and what a lucky kid! I love the cake, I love the decorations and the games you came up with. I am so glad he had a magical birthday. He will always remember it.
Will loves penguins, too, born also from a love for a little stuffed toy. Finally, we have that exact lion. That exact lion. Will sleeps with him under one arm and Penguin under the other, every single night.
You is good parents!!! It all looks like heaven on a (frozen) stick for the kids.
Ashley...
Love everything penguin. 5 is the best age for birthday parties!
where did you get your awesome pillows on the couch?
Jacqui--no layered jello. You are seeing things!
Kathryn--floral pillows were TJ Max a year or so ago. I've seen the material around the internet.
All--none of these ideas came from my head. All from googling "penguin party." Of course!
That was me, and yes we all seem to be struggling to sign in as ourselves.
Seriously, can I hire you as my child's party planner? If not, I will just have to pick your brain for every party.
This was awesome. I love Charlie's expression on the big cake reveal. He will remember this kind of stuff forever. You are such a good mom, but then again I am not surprised because you learned from the best.
Penguin related or not, the igloos are amazing.
Hi, this is me, signed in as me.
Congrats on an amazing party you brave woman to take on all those kids on your own. How much do you charge for your party planning skills?
Party is amazing I will say that, but daaaaaang girl, you look the bomb!
I absolutely love the igloo, and the little fish food packets as favors.
Charlie's face in that first picture with the animals is priceless!
You're a great mom, and you look super hot, too. Isn't that what really matters?
